Water Therapy

The Five Pillars of Kneipp therapy represents the principles of Sebastian Kneipp, its founder.  Here guest blogger George Bauer, Kneipp Active Programme leader in Scheffau, explains the basics of this old but still practiced way to well-being.

Water: ‘Kneipping’ is founded on cold water therapies.  Kneipp found that cold water immersions greatly aided his own path to recovery from tuberculosis so re-introduced water therapy for numerous other ailments.  He then went on to practice on other people and noted the benefits of such immersions and other water treatments which are now incorporated in Kneipping.  Cold water helps to boost the immune system but you don’t necessarily have to go for total immersion every time.  Various water therapies are explained as part of the Kneipp activity programme in Scheffau. 


Exercise: we all know the benefits of regular exercise but in Kneipp´s day regular exercise was hard work in the fields and also a form of gymnastics. These days, there are so many forms of exercise to choose from and it is so easy to go out for a brisk walk, we just have to find the time to do it.  Gentle exercise is included as part of the activity section of Kneipping in Scheffau.

Herbs & Plants: Sebastian Kneipp said „for every ailment grows a plant to cure it but against dumbness grows nothing“. Since a lot of modern day medicines were originally plant based, why not use the „real thing“. We recommend you always get proper advice to get the correct plant though, as there so many plants that look very similar. When using herbal remedies the correct dosage must always be adhered to.          A simple solution for insect bites is ribwort plantain, screw it up into a ball and rub it over the bite and it will ease the itching and reduce swelling, it is also well known for tickly coughs.

Nutrition: sounds better than diet but it means the same thing. A healthy diet helps us in all aspects of life, you just have to look at what you eat. Try to eat more fresh, local produce, fruit, vegetables, pulses. Try not to eat too much fatty food – everything really in moderation and don´t forget your fluids, fruit juices, water and the occasional tea, coffee, wine or beer too.

Well – being: probably the most important pillar/principle. It is all about feeling good about yourself and believing……..believing in yourself and that YOU CAN achieve what you set out to do. Nature has provided us with everything we need for a healthy, well balanced lifestyle.  Believe in yourself and you’ll be surprised at just what you really can do.  When Kneipp was treating his „patients“, he  discovered that if he could get them to believe in what he was doing, the curing part was so much easier.
