Ski School Leader Ingrid Salvenmoser

Ingrid Salvenmoser is one of the many people you may meet whilst on your activity skiing holiday to Scheffau and in the first of our series ‘Meet the People’ the former Austrian Ski racer, World Cup Champion, Olympian and World Champion Medallist tells us about her history in the sport and what she’s been doing since retirement.

Ingrid first started skiing at the age of 4, when she joined the Scheffau Ski Club where her uncle was a coach.  By the age of 6 her talent for whizzing down mountains had been recognized and Ingrid started to consistently train at her home town of Scheffau and in the wider SkiWelt ski arena of which the village is an integral part.  After competing successfully in ski races at both regional and national level Ingrid won a place at an eltie school in Stams – a boarding school for ski hopefuls where the cirriculum is designed to promote the youngsters’ sporting talent as well as their academic education.

In 1983 Ingrid made her World Cup debut and kept her coveted place  in the Austrian National Ski Team  for the next 17 years. Until her retirement at the age of 34, her life was filled with both Giant Slalom and Slalom races for her country.  Ingrid started in 196 World Cup races, skied in 6 World Championships, was Austrian Giant Slalom Champion in 1988 and again in 1991 when she was also National Slalom Champion as well as a Slalom Bronze medal winner at the 1991 Alpine World Skiing Championships in Saalbach Hinterglemm and became an Olympian in 1998 at the Winter  Games in Nagano (finishing in 6th position in the Women’s Slalom). Ingrid spent much of her career as one of the top 3 rankings in women’s downhill skiing as well as training, coaching and instructing.  In 1999 the Austrian Government honoured Ingrid’s contribution to Austria’s No. #1 sport with the Distinguished Service Cross – one the highest honours in Austria.

Ingrid finally retired from skiing in 2001 and, after all that travelling and competing, decided that a long break was the order of the day.  She returned to her home village of Scheffau where, in 2002, an opportunity presented itself to open her own ski and race school.  Ingrid is a qualified Ski School Leader (Skifuhrer) and top qualified ski instructor (Diplomschilehrer) and takes the experiences gained in her former career into her new one.  When asked what the core values of the school are Ingrid summarised them as follows:  Personal contact, excellent tuition and efficient, effective concentration on learning quickly to the best level possible.

Look out for our new courses soon at Activity Holidays Austria and see how your skiing can benefit from the mind of a champion.
