Railways (approximate journey time from Scheffau 75 minutes)
Achensee cog-railway.  A 19th century train which travels along the shores of Lake Achensee.  If you’ve booked Kayaking, Inner Tubing or Wild Water Swimming you may like to visit this before or after your water activity.  More information under www.achenseebahn.at

Silver Mine – Schwaz (approximate journey time from Scheffau 45 minutes)
Travel 800m into the mountain and discover why Tirol became strategically important for its silver and copper deposits.  More information under www.silberbergwerk.at

Activity – Salzburg (approximate journey time from Scheffau 75 minutes)
Visit the Sound of Music city and Mozart’s birthplace and home to the Salzburg Festival.  Picturesque medieval town, the capital of Salzburgerland, with wealth founded on the local salt.

Kitzbuhel (approximate journey time from Scheffau 20 minutes)
Home to the Austrian Downhill Ski Championship on the Hannenkahm Mountain as well as home to the Kitzbuheler Horn wild flower garden.  Cable cars, swimming pool and lake, as well as the nearby Aurach Wild Park zoo.

Innsbruck (approximate journey time from Scheffau 60 minutes)
Capital of the Tirol region and twice Winter Olympic city and host of the first Youth Winter Olympics in January 2012, Innsbruck is the original crossing of the River Inn (Innsbruck = bridge over the Inn).  Wander round the city, take the small train up to one of the picturesque alpine villages of Mutters or Fulmpmes or visit the city zoo with its Alpine animals.

Berchtesgaden (approximate journey time from Scheffau 45 minutes)
Eagle’s Nest – the famous Adolf Hitler Haus in the mountains is now a restaurant but you can travel up by bus to enjoy the views.

Salt Mines – dive deep in to the earth to discover the wealth of this region at the Berchtesgaden salt mines.

Dokumentation – an exhibition devoted to the influence of the National Socialist Party during the 1930s and 1940s in this region.

Summer Tobogganing – at the Alpengasthof in Berchtesgaden.

Glaciers (approximate journey time 3 hours from Scheffau)
GrossGlockner – Austria’s highest mountain and a nature park in the Hohe Tauern Region.

Swimming (approximate journey time from Scheffau – 10 to 30 minutes)
Mountain swimming is either in one of the many lakes in the area or in a water centre/swimming pool.

Hintersteinersee Lake – Mountain Swimming

Hintersteinersee Scheffau – the purest lake in Tirol. Bathing meadow from which to swim.  Rocky bottom but very refreshing.  Hintersteinersee has its own micro-climate in behind the rocks. Kiosk selling food and drink


Going Badesee –  has a slide and pontoons.  Surrounded by bathing meadows.

Moorsee, Soll – a peat based lake behind Soll.  ! white bathing suits turn brown because of the peat. Nearby café/restaurant.

Schwarzsee, Kitzbuhel – literally ‘the black lake’.  Peat based lake on the outskirts of Kitzbuhel.  Pedalos and rowing boats for hire. Nearby restaurant or kiosk.

Water Centres
Kaiserbad, Ellmau – complex of indoor and outdoor pools with slides, flumes and whirlpool.   Surrounded by grassy meadows with climbing frames, volleyball court and trampoline.  Sauna and steam room as well as massage all available.  Take your own picnic or use the cafeteria.

Panoramabad, Soll – complex of indoor and outdoor pools but not as large as the Kaiserbad.  On-site café.  Sauna, steam room, massage and other beauty treatments as well as a solarium.


Looping the Loop at Worgl Wave

Wave, Worgl – the newest complex in the area with indoor and outdoor pools, flotation tank, massage, steam room & sauna.

Aquarena, Kitzbuhel – complex of indoor and outdoor pools.  Sauna, steam room and café on site.

Panorama Badewelt, St. Johann in Tirol – indoor and outdoor pools.  One of the oldest in the region.

Tennis (approximate journey time from Scheffau 10 minutes)
Kaiserbad, Ellmau – 3 indoor tennis courts.   Booking is per hour and rental racquets are available.

Waldhof Hotel, Scheffau – one outdoor tennis courts.  Booking is per hour.  No rental racquets so please bring your own.

Squash (approximate journey time from Scheffau 10 minutes)
Kaiserbad, Ellmau – indoor hall.  Booking is per hour and rental racquets are available.
